Make and Mend Market - March 2010
Illustrator and Maker Lucy Farfort's love of making and creating handmade items (such as pouches, art prints
and stationary featuring her illustrations) is a natural extension of the work which she has done on editorial
illustrations, logos, t-shirts and promotional materials.
In addition to her own website
www.lucyshappyplace.com, she runs
a mini-shop on folksy.
Here is how Lucy describes "Make and Mend" - Two years ago, with a lack of places to sell my work and
places to exhibit I set up a market with another creative, which would allow other artists and
designers to showcase their work. We also created the event with the idea that individuals could
recycle good quality unwanted items in their wardrobes etc by selling them on - a cross between a design event
and car boot sale/flea market.
We aim to keep stall costs low in order that emerging creatives can have a pitch and use it as a testing
ground to see how their work sells etc. Part of the appeal of the market is that we always rotate sellers to
keep it fresh and give as many people the opportunity to have a stall as possible.
The event is now a monthly feature in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.
The next market in March 2010 will be held on the 28th March and will be the 2nd birthday of Make and Mend!
The venue is the Star and Shadow Cinema in Ouseburn (just outside Newcastle city centre) from 12 noon – 5pm.
As well as our usual 20 stalls we'll have a couple of bands playing, some party food and it free entry as usual.
Along with 20 other crafters and vintage/2nd hand traders, Lucy will be selling her handmade goods and art
prints at these markets. Her work is quirky and cute with a humorous twist. Some of items are already on sale
from The Arts Centre in Newcastle and work as part of the Inky Illustration Agency.
