Handmade Crafts Blog

Happy New Year - Lets make it a big one!

07/01/2015 - Matt Chatterley

2014 has been a great year for us in terms of business, but a bit of a mixed year for Handmade Crafts, as we've been too busy to devote the time to the site which it really needs (and deserves).

Faced with the prospect that if anything, 2015 is going to be even busier, we were faced with a tough choice - and the possibility that closing HMC might be the right thing to do.

However, a far better option has presented itself - asking some members of the community (yes, you!) to step forward and take an active part in making this site into the spectacular celebration of all things (UK) handmade which it should be.

So, we are looking for volunteers to apply to take up roles as editors, contributors and correspondants - possibly writing regular posts for the blog, or looking after a specific aspect of the site (e.g. links and events, giveaways, etc). All those who join us will form a team (along with Rosa, Steve and myself), and we will set up a private forum where we will be able to discuss the future direction and functionality of the site as well. We will continue to work on the site behind the scenes (and to take responsibility for it in public, as well as contributing ourselves from time to time), but by setting up a team to take charge, the site should benefit from renewed energy and activity.

What's in it for you?

We get quite a lot of traffic - and there's the potential for a lot more - so if you want to get your name out there in the handmade community, this is definitely a way to do it. Plus hopefully you'll enjoy contributing and you may find it helps you to advance your own business (or hobby) as well. You might just want to give back to the wonderful hotpot that is the UK crafts community. We'll work out between us what else is appropriate, e.g. some free advertising for contributors, etc, as well.

What's in it for us?

HMC isn't, has never been - and is unlikely to ever be - a commercial venture. It was set up because we love awesome handmade things and wanted to help promote them - and you'd be helping us to achieve the real potential of this endeavour (which I certainly feel we never really have).

We do charge for some parts of the site - and will always want to - as this makes a contribution towards the costs of development, hosting, etc - but there is probably a conversation to be had amongst the team in the future if the amounts raised exceed the costs.

How do you get involved?

We would like you to apply, by email, to admin@handmade-crafts.co.uk. But there's no complicated application. Just tell us what you would like to be involved in - and the sort of capacity you think is appropriate (e.g. as an editor, contributor, etc) - and why you'd be an awesome person for us to take on board. We are looking for a few (probably 3-4) people at this stage, but are playing it by ear to some extent.

I'd ask that you are happy to give up at least an hour a week (e.g. we would probably expect someone who is contributing to the blog to submit a post once a month or thereabouts), and to be included in any group discussions (which will probably be in a Facebook group or similar).

As ever, please feel free to post any questions you'd like answered publically in the comments - or to ask them via email if you prefer.

We look forwards to hearing from you! :)
